Tour FAQs

Can you do the Salkantay Trek without a guide?

Unlike the classic Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trail does not require a guide. The Salkantay Trail is a 46-mile finish that takes you through rugged mountainous terrain and a snowy Salkantay that connects Cusco to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. The maximum elevation of this strenuous hike is 15,090 feet at the Salkantay Pass.

How difficult is the Salkantay trail?

Experts rate the difficulty of the Salkantay hike at a difficulty level of 3-4 on a scale that goes up to 7. Due to the high altitude and steep slopes, you will need a reasonable level of fitness to complete this hike.

What time of year is best to go to the snowy Salkantay Trek?

Best Time to Hike the Salkantay Trail You can hike the Salkantay Trail year-round, but we recommend doing it in the driest months, April to December. Days are warm, around 62°F (17°C), and cooler at night and early morning around 40°F (5°C).

Do I need to book Salkantay Trek in advance?

Unlike the Inca Trail, which must be booked at least six months in advance, the Salkantay is a hike that can be organized much less in advance. This is because permits are not required to hike this trail; instead, you’ll just need to make sure you have a ticket to Machu Picchu.
